Utterly stunning pencil drawing by Boston-area artist Geneva MacDonald, active primarily in the WPA era, pre- and post-World War II. Titled “Mother and Child,” this is a viscerally haunting condemnation of war and its toll of human tragedy, with mild Surrealist overtones. Signed in pencil in the bottom margin, double matted and under glass, with bamboo wood-style frame. Drawing measures 16.75” by 4.75”, with total dimensions with frame 24.25” by 10.25”. The dealer from whom I obtained this told me that she spent a lot of time researching the artist and came up with little except that some of MacDonald’s works are in the collection of the Smithsonian and that, during her lifetime, she was politically outspoken and controversial, and her art suffered for it. In excellent condition save for light age toning. This is prime WPA art par excellence, and it's museum-worthy - this should be in the Smithsonian or MOMA or Albright-Knox. In fact, it's a bit staggering that no museum curator can see how artistically and historically relevant this is.Buyer to pay for item plus shipping. Two shipping options are available, USPS and UPS - eBay will compute rates for each based on your location. Select whichever presents the cheaper option for you.
