Please look at all THREE photos. Ely Green (1893-1968) was born to mixed race parents in Sewanee, Tennessee. His father was the son of a prominent white family, and his mother was a young, poor, black maid. Ely was moved around to live in several homes until he was a teen, when his white family sent him to Waxahachie, Texas to be raised by another wealthy white family. He was very intelligent, and as he grew he taught himself how to read. He became vocal about civil rights for blacks and soon became the target of the Texas KKK. He later found escape by enlisting and serving in the Army during WW1. Unfortunately, he again got in trouble there by loudly complaining about how blacks were treated in the military. Because of his heavy exposure to the Episcopal Church in Sewanee, he decided to join that denomination. The book continues and finishes this fascinating story. If you Google his name, you'll find several articles about him, though all are relatively brief. You will want to read this book. Arthur Ben Chitty (1914-2003) wrote a 10-page Afterword for this book and signed this copy on the title page. He did not inscribe this copy to anyone, so it will make a great gift. Chitty was a well-known, beloved, and prominent historian and member of the Sewanee community and the University of the South. The book is in Like New condition and will be carefully packaged to insure safe shipping. Laid in the book are 3 pages of additional information about Green and 5 pages about Chitty.
