Rare Original 8 x 10 1960's sepia Photo of Atlanta Life Insurance President Norris Bumstead Herndon (1897-1977). Photo has light staining/soiling and creasing. Note: In 1921 Herndon was one of only two African-Americans to graduate Harvard with an MBA. He served as Atlanta Life President 1927-1973. Under his tenure, the Company grew from $1 million in assets at the time of his father's death in 1927, to $84 million when he retired in 1973. Norris was extraordinarily reclusive. He seldom spoke publicly and was rarely photographed. He avoided appearances at national conventions or on society pages. His close friends acknowledged Herndon was an ultra-private gay man. This photo is from the estate of Edwin Simon. Simon became Atlanta Life chairman after Herndon's death in 1977.
