Small 4to., original blue pictorial cloth, xxviii, 182pp. Gilt inscription, spine and spine lettering rubbed otherwise a better than very good copy.Mary Margaret McBride (1899-1976) was an American interview host and writer, whose popular radio shows spanned more than 40 years. She began her radio career in NYC in 1934 with a daily women's advice show, with her persona as “Martha Deane”, “a kind grandmother with a Missouri drawl. As ‘Deane' she also was the women's page editor for the Newspaper Enterprise Association Syndicate. In 1937 she abandoned her ‘Deane' persona when she began a radio show on CBS, interviewing well-known figures in the world of arts, entertainment, and politics. In the 1940s the audience for her daily women's advice show numbered close to 8 million, and she was carried on most of the major networks. In the 1940s her shows had a broad range of guests, and during World War II on her NBC show, she began ‘breaking the color line' mixing in African American guests. “ Much of her later work was done in collaboration with her manager and partner, Stella Karn. “McBride and Karn made a name for themselves as pioneers in the field of broadcasting, and also as trailblazers for the future of lesbian and bisexual journalists.” Books can also be picked up at our location in Toronto at 366 Adelaide Street West, Suite LL05, M5V 1R9.
