Winston, second president of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, Raleigh (now N.C. State University:). In this piece, "The Relation of the Whites to the Negroes", Winston recalled his personal interactions with "Negroes" -- he did capitalize the word -- on his family's plantation.
