Original 1977 NAACP James Weldon Johnson Award Plaque presented to noted Artist Jewel Woodward Simon (1911-1996). 10" X 8" wooden base. In good condition with some pitting and scratches on the metal.Note: Jewel Alma Woodard Simon (1911-1996) was a renowned African-American painter, sculptor, print-maker and poet. A native of Houston, she lived in Atlanta since 1939. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Atlanta University and was the first African-American to be awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Atlanta School of Art. She studied painting under Hale Woodruff (1900-1980) and sculpture under Alice Dunbar (1923-1996) at Atlanta University. Mrs. Simon was a member and officer of the National Conference of Artists since its inception in 1958. She was married to Edwin L. Simon, Chairman of Atlanta Life Insurance Company
