"MARIAN ANDERSON" ORIGINAL STAGE PERFORMANCE POSTER - 1950s RCA Victor Records / S. Hurok Attractions Inc. 14" x 22". 2-color litho on cardboard. Original uncut & unused "window card" style sign with exceptional illustrated portrait imagery. Bold and eye-catching graphics. Marian Anderson was one of the most celebrated American singers of the twentieth century. She preferred to perform on stage, but made many recordings that reflected her broad performance repertoire of everything from opera to traditional American songs and spirituals. Anderson became an important figure in the struggle for black artists to overcome racial prejudice in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. Famously in 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused permission for Anderson to sing to an integrated audience in Constitution Hall. With the aid of FDR, Anderson performed an open-air concert on Easter Sunday, 1939, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Marian was the first black person to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1955. She opened doors for generations of black American singers. This historically significant piece of signage is loaded with visual appeal. Condition is considered GOOD to FAIR with moderate surface/stain/edge wear. Mild surface scuffing with no folds or creases. There are scattered small edge tears in non-graphic white border areas (largest being two upper center 3/8" tears). No pinholes or separations. Imagery is still bold & attractive. Overall, we feel this poster is in very displayable condition by most standards (see photos). This notable window card would make an impressive frameable display for the discriminating MARIAN ANDERSON and/or BLACK AMERICANA enthusiast.
