The Last Mile - A Play in Three Acts - (Allan Knight Chalmers' Copy)Wexley, John Very Rare copy of this early 20th century American play, made even RARER as this was the personal copy of, and SIGNED by Dr. Allan Knight Chalmers who was the pastor of New York's Broadway Tabernacle Congregational Church, a pacifist, and a civil rights activist. Dr. Chalmers helped organize the defense of the Scottsboro Boys, became chairman of The Scottsboro Defense Committee, and later was the single most determined figure in having them paroled or released. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. acknowledged Chalmers, who taught King at the Boston University School of Theology, as an important influence in his intellectual development toward non-violence. Dr. Chalmers notes that he bought this copy at the "Theater after seeing performance, May 6, 1930" on the front flyleaf. A UNIQUE and RARE piece of Civil Rights memorabilia.
