*********** Up for sale... an original, vintage cardboard poster / advertisement for the LANE COLLEGE (located in Jackson, Tennessee) - Verse Speaking Choir. It features the African American members of the choir proudly on the advertisement. A Verse Speaking Choir is an ensemble speaking by a group often using various voice combinations and contrasts to bring out the meaning or tonal beauty of a passage of poetry or prose. This advertisement is a rare survivor from the South that dates around the late 1940's to 1950's... during the early part of the Civil Rights Movement. The sign also notes Mary Glass Musgrove as the Director. I acquired this advertisement from Appleton, Wisconsin. I mention this as I found a Mary Glass in Milwaukee, WI. Appleton is about 1 1/2 hours from Milwaukee. Mary Glass is noted as receiving her BA in Education from Lane College. Same person? Well, that will require additional research. Either way, it's a great piece of Black Americana. Lane College History: Lane College was founded in 1882 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church in America as the C.M.E. High School. It was named after Methodist Bishop Isaac Lane who co-founded the school. Planning for the school had begun in 1878, but the school's establishment was delayed by a yellow fever epidemic in the region in 1878. Its primary purpose was the education of newly freed slaves, and the original curriculum focused on the preparation of "teachers and preachers. Today... Lane College is a private historically black college associated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and located in Jackson, Tennessee. It offers associate and baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences. source: wikipedia As you'll notice in the pictures, I used archival tape (mostly on the edges, top and bottom) to help stabilize any weak areas.
